In the 90s, Ames Performance Engineering had become hugely successful with its Pontiac restoration parts mail-order business. In 1998, we learned that the Pontiac Oakland Club’s national convention would be returning to New England in Sturbridge, Mass. It had already been held at Sturbridge in 1987 and at Loon Mountain in 1995.
Realizing that our customers would see the convenience of visiting our facility en route to the show, for a second time, Steve organized a schedule of tours and we provided lunch (a cookout in the backyard behind the Ames residence) as part of the event.
The laser show came out of Steve’s love of the dramatic and was based on “I Dream of Jeannie” when the husband falls asleep watching the show, and a genie appears, offering three wishes. Because of Steve’s love of fast driving and loud music, the show featured both. No one who was there ever forgot it! In later years, the computer-generated show failed, and no one could bring it back to life.
Then in 2024, a customer from Florida sent us a DVD of his tour, and we are forever grateful to be able to view the event as a piece of history leading to the inception of our museum.
Enjoy!
